Whispers Of The Fan began with Hong Kong and Bangkok, the two points from which Mandarin Oriental’s story can be traced. The original Mandarin Hotel was founded in Hong Kong in the middle of the 20th century, while the Oriental Hotel opened earlier in Bangkok in the late 19th century. In 1985, the two came together under one name: Mandarin Oriental. For Renaud Salmon, Chief Creative Officer of Amouage, that was important to incorporate. As he explains, “the starting point would have to be the origin” of what Mandarin Oriental represents today. Together with perfumer Suzy Le Helley, Salmon travelled to both cities and the original hotels, searching for the details that could be translated into scent. The result is Whispers Of The Fan, a composition built from eleven notes, one for each blade of Mandarin Oriental’s fan, carrying traces of Hong Kong, Bangkok, and the Omani roots of Amouage. Amouage Frames Whispers of the Fan Through Mandarin Oriental's Origins
In this specific execution, Amouage introduces the Mandarin Oriental collaboration through a caption that traces the hotel brand's origin to two cities: Hong Kong in the mid-20th century and Bangkok in the late 19th century. The post centers heritage and geography, quoting Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon mid-sentence — "the starting point would have to be the o" — before the provided caption cuts off. Collaborator tags bychelseaclaire and maria.caminoo indicate creator involvement, while the hashtags WhispersOfTheFan and HighPerfumery frame the project within prestige fragrance.
The visible creative decision is to open the collaboration with institutional history — the Mandarin Oriental's dual-city origin — before introducing scent notes or product imagery. Amouage lets the hotel brand's story carry the introduction, grounding the fragrance in a specific geography: Hong Kong and Bangkok. That choice fits a luxury fragrance market where storytelling and cultural specificity now carry weight alongside ingredient composition. For Amouage, which has long built authority around Omani heritage, this extends that seriousness about place to a partner's history without displacing Amouage's own origin story. The move also lets the collaboration speak to two distinct Asian luxury markets at once, borrowing the Mandarin Oriental's credibility in both cities. The creator tags and the HighPerfumery hashtag indicate distribution through social channels that serve fragrance enthusiasts. Strategists should watch whether subsequent assets translate the twin-city narrative into a concrete product identity — how the fan and the two origins are rendered in scent — or whether the heritage framing stays confined to the caption.
